What work actually happens on a drilling rig?
Drilling projects bring together the drilling contractor, operator, well engineering, fluids specialists, pressure-control equipment, marine and supply-base teams. Positions can be based on offshore installations, onshore rigs, workshops and shore-based planning offices. A job called “rig engineer” does not automatically mean the same duties across employers.
Understand the main work teams
| Team | Common roles | What to learn |
|---|---|---|
| Rig operations | Floorhand, derrickhand, assistant driller, driller | Rig systems, procedures, handovers, safe movement around machinery |
| Well engineering | Drilling engineer, drilling supervisor, wellsite engineer | Well trajectory, casing programs, mud hydraulics, well integrity |
| Specialist services | Mud engineer, cementing engineer, directional driller | Service-specific engineering, reports, equipment checks |
| Support | Logistics, HSE, marine, materials coordinator | Permits, mobilization, lifting plans, material traceability |
Where can a student enter?
Entry pathways depend on the company: technician apprenticeships, engineering graduates, logistics support, HSE internships and equipment service companies. Some operational roles require documented prior work, competence assessment and offshore medical/travel readiness. Ask for the specific hiring level and progression expectations rather than assuming a particular title is open to fresh graduates.
Technical foundations
Understand a typical drilling sequence, drillstring components, mud circulation, drilling fluid properties, casing and cementing objectives, blowout prevention principles and how the work is handed over between shifts. Learn what an equipment serial number or OEM datasheet tells you, and why an unverified part substitution may create safety risks.
Safety, physical demands and work environment
Fieldwork may involve long shifts, noise, weather, moving equipment, travel to remote sites and wearing suitable PPE. The employer must assess hazards, train staff for their duties and provide safe systems of work. Do not confuse personal resilience with ignoring fatigue or pressure-control risks. Workers should be encouraged to report unsafe conditions and stop work when required by site policy.
Offshore training: what to verify
Employers may specify OPITO BOSIET/T-BOSIET, HUET and a suitable medical assessment for offshore travel. Well-control personnel may need the appropriate IWCF or IADC pathway. None is a universal certificate for all drilling jobs. Verify variant, role, level, location and training-provider approval with the employer before paying.
