Do all offshore jobs require the same certificates?

No. An offshore platform, helicopter journey, vessel assignment, shore-based office role and drilling contractor may have different requirements. The appropriate training standard, approval body, medical checks and refresher interval depend on the duty holder/operator, location, jurisdiction, role and transport method. Ask the employer or the authorized recruitment channel for an exact list before paying a training centre.

BOSIET and tropical BOSIET

BOSIET means Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. OPITO describes its BOSIET with CA-EBS product as entry training for personnel travelling by helicopter with a compressed-air emergency breathing system. Its subject matter includes offshore hazards, helicopter-ditching escape, sea survival, first aid, basic firefighting and emergency response.

T-BOSIET is the tropical variant aimed at offshore oil and gas installations in tropical environments. It is not an automatic substitute for every region’s BOSIET variant. OPITO lists T-BOSIET as product code 5501; confirm the exact standard and variant your target employer accepts.

HUET and T-HUET

HUET focuses on helicopter underwater escape. Some HUET products include an emergency breathing-system variant, such as CA-EBS. OPITO also lists a Tropical HUET standard. Whether HUET is delivered within a broader induction course or separately depends on the training pathway and employer requirements. Never assume a one-day HUET course equals a full BOSIET.

FOET and refresher training

FOET means Further Offshore Emergency Training. It refreshes applicable emergency knowledge and skills. OPITO’s BOSIET with CA-EBS standard specifies a maximum four-year interval before the corresponding FOET, but some duty holders or regional requirements may be different. Candidates should check the precise certificate and date with the approved provider.

Comparing common training types

Training Purpose Check with employer
BOSIET / BOSIET with CA-EBS Basic offshore induction and emergency response Exact variant, breathing-system type, medical prerequisites
T-BOSIET Tropical-environment basic offshore safety Whether acceptable for destination and asset
HUET / T-HUET Helicopter emergency and underwater escape Whether included in BOSIET or required separately
FOET / T-FOET Emergency response refresher Acceptable prerequisite, expiry and regional variant
Other site-specific training Role-specific hazard controls Operator induction, permits, worksite and task requirements

What about offshore medicals and physical preparedness?

Some training products include water-based simulated emergencies and other physical activity. OPITO-approved centres provide course joining instructions and may require medical declarations or fitness-to-train confirmation. Suitability should be assessed against the applicable standard and qualified medical guidance, not an invented universal fitness test or assumptions based on a candidate’s appearance or disability.

Does STCW apply?

STCW is a maritime training and certification framework for seafarers. Its relevance depends on the vessel, crew position and national rules; it is not a universal certificate for every oil and gas platform worker. Check the flag state, employer and training pathway when the job is on a ship or offshore vessel.

How to verify a course before you pay

  1. Obtain the precise training name and code from the employer.
  2. Identify the destination, asset, transport method and governing requirements.
  3. Check that the training centre is appropriately approved for the particular product.
  4. Ask about entry/medical requirements, safety briefings and the certificate’s accepted validity.
  5. Keep written evidence of any employer recognition or reimbursement policy.
