Engineering in oil and gas is multidisciplinary

Oil and gas employers need people who understand structures, equipment, energy conversion, chemical processes, instrumentation, automation, reservoirs and well systems. Not all such roles are petroleum engineering positions. Mechanical, process, electrical, instrumentation and project engineers may support very different parts of the production value chain.

Compare common engineering pathways

Specialty Example problems Foundational skills
Mechanical Pump, compressor, piping and equipment reliability Mechanics, materials, rotating equipment, standards
Electrical Power distribution, motors, hazardous-area equipment Protection, equipment selection, electrical safety
Instrumentation & Controls Measurement and automation P&IDs, transmitters, control loops, calibration
Process / chemical Separation and facilities operation Thermodynamics, flow, process safety, mass balance
Petroleum / subsurface Reservoir and well performance Geoscience, well integrity, reservoir modelling
Project / construction Scope, interface and delivery Scheduling, drawings, contracts, technical coordination

Where are engineering jobs based?

Engineering design offices, EPC contractors, fabrication workshops, operator facilities, onshore construction sites, offshore platforms and service companies all employ engineers. A “field engineer” may supervise equipment work, deliver technical services or investigate failures. Always compare the role’s actual description and safety prerequisites.

Build a useful technical portfolio

Show a solved problem: motor selection from a genuine datasheet, pressure loss calculation with assumptions, valve schedule interpretation, pump curve analysis, P&ID walk-through or failure-mode study. Use real sources responsibly; a project simulation should not be presented as operational experience.

What employers may assess

Ability to interpret technical requirements, identify uncertainty, understand standards at a practical level, perform calculations carefully and communicate results. Employers may expect CAD, spreadsheet modelling, programming or specific proprietary applications. Do not list software you have never used.

Safety and certification

Engineering work must respect equipment integrity, applicable standards, permits, quality and change control. Professional registration and specialized certifications depend on jurisdiction and role; some engineering jobs involve hazardous-area training or offshore inductions while others do not.

Interview questions

  1. How would you validate incomplete technical data before selecting equipment?
  2. What assumptions did you make in a university project?
  3. How do you handle a conflict between a drawing and the equipment nameplate?
  4. When should engineering calculations be reviewed by a qualified supervisor?
