Technical sales is more than selling

An oilfield sales engineer connects a customer’s operational requirement to a technically compliant supply or service proposal. The role often combines engineering literacy, quotation discipline, relationship management, supplier sourcing, contract discussions and delivery coordination. Technical credibility matters because wrong equipment information can have safety and financial consequences.

Common sales and commercial roles

Role Scope
Sales engineer Qualify technical enquiries, develop offers and coordinate client feedback
Application specialist Help select models, interpret specifications, escalate uncertainties
Inside sales / quotation specialist Supplier follow-up, price/lead time reconciliation, proposal documents
Key account engineer Manage long-cycle customer relationships and technical stakeholder needs
Business development engineer Find markets, understand contracts, register as supplier and assess opportunities

Learn to read equipment specifications

A buyer may provide a manufacturer nameplate, a part number, a drilling equipment reference, a vague description or an obsolete model. Good sales work first confirms make, model, material, pressure/temperature rating, connection, service environment, quantity and required certification. Substitution must be explicitly accepted by qualified parties when applicable.

RFQ to purchase order: typical sequence

  1. Record the enquiry and clarify missing technical requirements.
  2. Check whether suppliers are genuine OEMs, authorized channels or traders and what evidence supports the claim.
  3. Compare compliance, lead time, warranty, packing and document requirements.
  4. Issue a clear proposal with stated assumptions and exclusions.
  5. Follow up through CRM, document changes and review the final PO against the quoted specifications.

Common mistakes to avoid

Inventing stock availability, assigning certifications without evidence, treating compatible as identical, offering unclear partial substitutes and losing revision history. Customers expect honest technical decisions even if that means declining a bid.

Who can enter this career?

Mechanical, electrical, petroleum, chemical and industrial engineering graduates may fit technical roles; commercially trained candidates may enter sales coordination or sourcing where permitted. Technical knowledge, writing quality and customer service are more important than copying a generic job title into a CV.

Work environment and performance

Many roles are office-based with site visits, travel and client meetings. Some employers use variable sales incentives; investigate what is guaranteed, how commission is defined and which compliance obligations apply. Employer safety rules apply during site visits.

Interview scenarios

  1. A buyer asks for an obsolete valve: what information do you request?
  2. How do you distinguish a commercial quote from technical approval?
  3. How do you handle a deadline with no reliable lead time?
  4. How would you document customer changes in a CRM?
