What production operations involve
Once a field is producing, operations teams monitor wells, production systems, processing facilities, utilities and supporting infrastructure. Tasks differ greatly between a wellpad, central processing facility, onshore terminal, LNG plant and offshore platform. Operators work within site-approved instructions; a job guide cannot authorize technical interventions.
Production job families
| Role | Focus |
|---|---|
| Field production operator | Site rounds, monitoring, reporting and designated process tasks |
| Control-room operator | Monitoring and response from distributed or centralized systems |
| Process engineer | Performance, material/energy balance, process optimization |
| Production / facilities engineer | Well and surface system performance, coordination and integrity |
| Utilities / support operator | Systems needed for continued safe plant operation |
Essential knowledge
Basic fluid flow, equipment behavior, measurement and instrumentation, process schematics, pressure and temperature management, alarms, shutdown systems and shift handovers. Trainees should practice understanding written procedures, records and escalation channels. Specialized actions must remain with qualified authorized personnel.
Process safety and fatigue
Process facilities can present major accident hazards. Workers need to understand barriers, equipment limits and how deviations are reported. Shift work can increase fatigue; reporting and supervision practices are as important as an individual’s attempt to stay alert. No universal roster or rotation should be assumed for an advertised role.
Training and medical suitability
Requirements differ between a refinery, LNG project, offshore platform and remote onshore facility. Site induction, task competence, operator authorization, emergency training and medical assessments must be checked against the specific post. Offshore certificates are not automatically needed for a land-based processing plant.
Routes for graduates
Look for operator trainee roles, process engineering internships, instrumentation support and structured graduate programs. Practical academic projects can involve a simplified energy balance, P&ID interpretation, pressure-drop analysis or process-incident learning exercise; be transparent about assumptions.
Interview readiness
- What do you do when operating data does not agree with the instrument display?
- How should observations be handed over to the next shift?
- What is the difference between routine performance and safety-critical barriers?
- Which actions require supervisor approval or permit controls?
