Oil and Gas Careers in Papua New Guinea — LNG, Field Operations and Project Support

Explore practical oil and gas career knowledge, original source references, useful training guidance and related topics. Educational guides are not advertisements for current vacancies.

OilfieldPeople Regional Career Wiki · Reviewed 17 October 2026 · Educational guide, not a list of confirmed open jobs.

Papua New Guinea belongs in OilfieldPeople’s broader Asia-Pacific coverage rather than the ASEAN category. The PNG LNG project connects upstream production areas and processing with an LNG facility near Port Moresby; planned or proposed development activity must not be presented as approved vacancies or guaranteed construction work.

Explore the country by region and operating hub

Use the following places to understand where different career functions may be based. These are research entry points, not promises of employment, live vacancies or employer sponsorship.

Hela and Southern Highlands

Research upstream natural-gas production support, mechanical equipment, facilities operations, field logistics and contractor HSE where a specific project confirms work activity.

Gulf Province

Study prospective upstream and midstream development roles, civil/construction interfaces, engineering, environmental services and field logistics. Project stage and actual recruitment dates must be confirmed.

Port Moresby and Central Province

Explore LNG processing/export facilities, corporate/project support, operations and supply logistics. Recruitment offices and actual project sites can differ.

Lae and regional supply chains

Look at transport, warehousing, fabrication and equipment distribution businesses that may service the resource sector, without implying all positions are oil and gas jobs.

Company categories to research

Not every oil and gas employee works for a field operator. These employer categories recruit different skills and may use separate recruitment systems.

  • LNG plant and upstream operations
  • Engineering, field services and maintenance
  • Project construction / commissioning if actually approved and recruiting
  • Environmental/HSE, community relations, logistics and procurement

How to find a genuine role

  1. Choose an actual job family, such as drilling, HSE, mechanical maintenance, process engineering, supply chain or technical sales.
  2. Identify the legal employer and separate its office address from the actual worksite, supply base or offshore installation.
  3. Read the official vacancy, experience and education rules; do not infer a current vacancy from a career guide.
  4. Confirm whether employment is permanent, project-based or fixed-term, and whether the schedule is office, shift, rotational or site based.
  5. Check the application destination on an official employer recruitment channel; avoid advance placement-fee demands and requests for banking credentials.

Training, work eligibility and safety

Project investment decisions, construction scope and local employment commitments can change. Check the operator’s official recruitment site and relevant PNG employment and immigration requirements. Do not treat future project announcements as live job advertisements.

Starting your career from this country

Build a small portfolio of authentic technical work; understand where the employer fits in the oil/gas supply chain; apply only to posts explicitly open to your experience level. If you want field employment, investigate the worksite conditions and training with the responsible employer rather than purchasing a generic list of certificates.
