Fresh graduates do not need to start on a rig
Oil and gas companies, contractors and equipment providers offer many different career pathways. Recent graduates may start in engineering design, field services, maintenance, procurement, HSE administration, labs, logistics, technology support or commercial coordination. Whether a role permits zero experience must be stated in the actual job advertisement.
Different early-career routes
| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| Student internship | Enrolment requirements, supervisor, duration, compensation and practical work |
| Graduate trainee program | Eligible graduation period, rotations, training plan, conversion terms |
| Junior engineer | Required degree, supervision, actual experience threshold |
| Technician apprentice | Qualification pathway, site safety, hands-on competency |
| Project assignment | Fixed term, site demands, travel, end-of-project conditions |
What to put on your first CV
Show education, authentic internships, concrete projects, practical software skills, language ability and locations you can work in. Describe a problem and your specific contribution; a generic list of adjectives is less useful than evidence. Do not label an academic exercise as professional rig experience.
Build a 90-day readiness plan
First 30 days: research three relevant job families and study their real vacancy requirements. Next 30 days: build one documented project or technical writing sample and improve communication skills. Final 30 days: apply selectively through official sources and prepare for technical and behavioral interviews. Keep a tracker of employer, role, URL and status.
Do you need an offshore certificate in advance?
Only purchase training after confirming its relevance to your target job and the approved variant. An offshore safety course does not guarantee hiring, and many office or onshore roles have entirely different entry requirements. A legitimate employer can explain whether induction is provided after selection.
Interview topics
- Explain one university problem you solved from assumptions to conclusion.
- Describe when you recognized a safety or data quality concern.
- What is the distinction between a purchase specification and a confirmed replacement part?
- How do you respond when you do not know a technical answer?
Common fraud indicators
Requests for placement fees, unverified emails, guaranteed permits, urgent payments or personal bank details before a legitimate recruitment step deserve scrutiny. Confirm any surprise instruction through the employer’s official channel.
