Which oilfield career matches your background?
Petroleum engineering students often study drilling, reservoirs and production, but relevant pathways also exist for mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, chemical, civil, geology, finance, HR, logistics, computer science and procurement backgrounds. A real job advertisement is the source of truth for eligibility.
Choose a role by its work environment
Office: engineering design, simulation, commercial sourcing, contracts and planning. Workshop: equipment service, inspection, QA/QC, repairs and technical testing. Onshore field: drilling, production facilities and site maintenance. Offshore: installations, vessels, logistics and specialist services, subject to travel, safety and medical rules specific to the assignment.
How should new graduates prepare?
- Choose two or three job families you understand and can explain.
- Build foundational competence in relevant software, calculations, equipment and safety concepts.
- Prepare a small evidence-based technical project or internship record.
- Use accurate CV claims, and cite experience you actually have.
- Check the employer, application URL and hiring status before sending personal information.
- For offshore work, ask the employer which exact certificates and medical checks are required.
Career knowledge vs live vacancies
Wiki guides are generally evergreen educational material reviewed when standards change. Individual vacancies are time-sensitive and must be independently verified, rechecked and closed promptly. Never interpret the appearance of a company, certification or job title in the wiki as a current advertisement.
Where we are researching careers
Indonesia is the launch market. We will progressively cover Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Brunei, with Papua New Guinea separately included in the wider Asia-Pacific section. Visa eligibility, license requirements, offshore medical rules and labor protections must be checked with the relevant country and employer before applying.
Source and review policy
Technical guides favor primary occupational and training standards, including OPITO, occupational safety authorities and competent employer documentation. Any important safety or legal claim needs a source and review date. References in the individual guides link to the relevant authoritative sources.
