Oil and Gas Careers in Indonesia — Regions, Companies, Roles and Training

Explore practical oil and gas career knowledge, original source references, useful training guidance and related topics. Educational guides are not advertisements for current vacancies.

Indonesia spans mature onshore production provinces, offshore areas, LNG and processing projects, service bases, fabrication yards and engineering support centers. A search for a city may refer to the office where a role is based, a mobilisation hub or a project site elsewhere. Always distinguish the contractual work location from the point of departure.

Explore the country by region and operating hub

Use the following places to understand where different career functions may be based. These are research entry points, not promises of employment, live vacancies or employer sponsorship.

Riau: Duri, Minas and Pekanbaru

Study onshore production operations, workover/service support, maintenance, field logistics and the companies supplying equipment. Duri and Minas are district/field search terms; nearby administrative labels should not be treated as an individual employer or live opening.

East Kalimantan: Balikpapan, Bontang and the wider region

Consider marine/yard support, supply bases, production facilities, drilling services, instrumentation, maintenance, technical commercial support and related project supply-chain tasks.

Jakarta and the greater Jakarta area

Explore head-office engineering, technical sales, planning, tenders, HR, regulatory interfaces and procurement. A Jakarta office role should not be labelled offshore simply because the employer serves offshore customers.

East Java: Lamongan, Surabaya and Bojonegoro

Research fabrication, logistics, process/facilities support, maintenance and procurement. Some project personnel work at locations far from the recruitment office.

Aceh and northern Sumatra

Research historically important onshore gas/energy activities and regional service/logistics support. Do not imply a large pool of current vacancies without employer confirmation.

Riau Islands: Batam

Look at fabrication, maritime industries, inspection, engineering services, logistics and equipment servicing connected to offshore supply chains. Confirm whether a post is specifically oilfield, shipbuilding or another sector.

Company categories to research

Not every oil and gas employee works for a field operator. These employer categories recruit different skills and may use separate recruitment systems.

  • Operator/production contractors: production, facilities and reservoir-linked roles
  • Drilling contractors and service companies: well construction, field services, maintenance
  • EPC/fabrication and equipment companies: project engineering, quality, workshops, logistics
  • Supply-chain specialists: RFQs, expediting, materials, shipping and commercial technical sales

How to find a genuine role

  1. Choose an actual job family, such as drilling, HSE, mechanical maintenance, process engineering, supply chain or technical sales.
  2. Identify the legal employer and separate its office address from the actual worksite, supply base or offshore installation.
  3. Read the official vacancy, experience and education rules; do not infer a current vacancy from a career guide.
  4. Confirm whether employment is permanent, project-based or fixed-term, and whether the schedule is office, shift, rotational or site based.
  5. Check the application destination on an official employer recruitment channel; avoid advance placement-fee demands and requests for banking credentials.

Training, work eligibility and safety

For Indonesian applicants, review the employer’s official qualifications, the relevant local employment terms and the particular safety-training regime. International offshore qualifications do not automatically replace locally required appointments. Bahasa Indonesia versions of practical student guidance are available.

Starting your career from this country

Build a small portfolio of authentic technical work; understand where the employer fits in the oil/gas supply chain; apply only to posts explicitly open to your experience level. If you want field employment, investigate the worksite conditions and training with the responsible employer rather than purchasing a generic list of certificates.
