Malaysia combines upstream offshore activity, gas/LNG processing, service bases and engineering and commercial functions. Job advertisements may refer to the onshore mobilisation or supply-base location even when the operational assignment is elsewhere. PETRONAS publishes activity outlooks and operates official career channels.
Explore the country by region and operating hub
Use the following places to understand where different career functions may be based. These are research entry points, not promises of employment, live vacancies or employer sponsorship.
Sarawak: Miri, Bintulu and surrounding areas
Explore oilfield service contractors, LNG/plant operations, mechanical and E&I maintenance, marine logistics, supply bases and engineering. Offshore asset requirements must be checked against the actual operator.
Sabah: Kota Kinabalu and Labuan connections
Research offshore support, equipment maintenance, marine logistics, materials management and related technical service roles. Labuan is a separate federal territory rather than a Sabah city.
Federal Territory of Labuan
Consider offshore supply-base operations, warehousing, marine interface, inspections, procurement and support services. An assignment may involve transfers to offshore facilities.
Peninsular Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu, Kelantan
Kuala Lumpur supports engineering/commercial offices; East Coast supply-base and marine logistics operations form different career contexts. Verify actual site location and rotation.
Company categories to research
Not every oil and gas employee works for a field operator. These employer categories recruit different skills and may use separate recruitment systems.
- Production operators and production-sharing contractors
- Offshore drilling/service contractors and well services
- Integrated LNG/process facilities, maintenance and turnaround teams
- Oilfield materials logistics, marine supply bases and procurement
How to find a genuine role
- Choose an actual job family, such as drilling, HSE, mechanical maintenance, process engineering, supply chain or technical sales.
- Identify the legal employer and separate its office address from the actual worksite, supply base or offshore installation.
- Read the official vacancy, experience and education rules; do not infer a current vacancy from a career guide.
- Confirm whether employment is permanent, project-based or fixed-term, and whether the schedule is office, shift, rotational or site based.
- Check the application destination on an official employer recruitment channel; avoid advance placement-fee demands and requests for banking credentials.
Training, work eligibility and safety
Malaysia-specific professional registrations, safety appointments and work authorization may apply. Verify the right to work and the actual legal employing entity. Do not pay someone who promises to guarantee a PETRONAS interview or offer; PETRONAS provides an official careers portal.
Starting your career from this country
Build a small portfolio of authentic technical work; understand where the employer fits in the oil/gas supply chain; apply only to posts explicitly open to your experience level. If you want field employment, investigate the worksite conditions and training with the responsible employer rather than purchasing a generic list of certificates.
